THE MARCH OF THE LIVING

The March of the Living is an annual event which combines both an educational tour of Poland and its Jewish history through the Second World War and the horrors of the Holocaust, culminating on Yom Hashoah, the Jewish remeberance day of the Holocaust with a March from Auschwitz I to Auschwitz II. A March that would have been from the concentration camp to the death camp. Now, with over 9000 people I willwalk with survivors, others from my community and many many other countries, ages and religions to remember the horrors that occurred in that place at that time. If I have the energy and emotional strength, you’ll get an update on what I see and experience. Follow my journey. But more importantly, see these sights yourself after me.

From a  trek of 60km from the Mediterranean Sea to the Sea of Galilee (also known as Lake Tiberias) to the March of the Living in Poland, follow my trip, see the photos and enjoy the experience alongside me and my companions

This was my Trek Itinerary in 2022.

Day 1 – Khziv River – Abirim

Approx. 13km 658 m total ascent

Upon arrival at Ben Gurion, we will transfer to the North of Israel via private bus (approximately 2hr journey) to our hotel in Nahariya for refresh and breakfast.

We will start our trek by taking a short transfer via private bus to the Khziv River Nature Reserve and will begin by following the green mark trail taking us along the river.  After approximately 5km, there will be the option to climb to the Montfort Castle (a ruined Crusader Castle also known as the ‘Castle of the Horn’) there and back.  After another 5km, we turn left out of the river and follow the trail upwards towards the Abirim Village where our bus will meet us and return to the hotel to relax and have dinner.

Day 2 – Abirim – Mount Meron
Approx. 19km 856m total ascent

After breakfast, we will transfer via private bus to Abirim and walk another 7km to Elkosh Bridge on road 89 where we will once again arrive at the Khiz river and follow the green mark trail along several springs until reaching the largest “Ein Hotem”.  We will continue walking to the Neriya River until reaching Hirbet Hamama, the campsite in front of Mount Meron Field School.  We will then begin our 4km ascent to the top of Mount Meron (Israel’s second highest mountain) where we will meet our coach and transfer to our next hotel.

Day 3 – Mount Meron – Safed
Approx. 17km 784m total ascent

After another delicious Israeli breakfast, we will transfer back to Mount Meron and rejoin the trail through Mount Meron peak and the Upper Amud River until reaching Ein Koves along the black mark trail.  We shall continue thereafter walking next to the Meron River until reaching the entrance to the Amud River Nature Reserve which is known for its unique form of nature, perennial stream, rock pools and lush vegetation.  The first spring we will encounter is Ein Yakim, with a beautiful walnut tree in close proximity.  After another 1km we will reach the Sekhvi Pools where the Sekhvi and Amud streams come together, forming small, shallow pools of clear water shaded by tall plane trees.  A beautiful place to stop and have a moment before turning left and embarking on the trail taking us up towards Ein Kove and Safed.

Day 4 Safed – Sea of Galilee
Approx. 17km 278m total ascent

Once again we will begin our morning at Ein Koves and walk back to the Amud River until we reach a marker known as the Amud Rock Pillar.  After a few metres we will cross Road 8077 where after approximately 1km, the trail splits.  We will pass under a bridge and reach Ginossar Beach and the Sea of Galilee where we may empty our bottle of water into the sea out of tradition!
